August 11 is National 811 Day. Help spread the word about this free service to identify utility lines before digging, to avert the disruption of service, the threat of litigation and the loss of life or limb.
Whether you’re hiring a contractor or you’re a do-it- yourself type (DIY), if you are planning a project and need to dig - call 811 two days before digging. Whether you’re:
Planting a bush or tree- Digging for a pond or water feature
- Installing a fence
- Installing a mailbox
- Pouring concrete
Call 811 before digging – it’s the law!
When calling 811 before digging, utility companies with facilities in the area will be contacted and line locators will be dispatched to the project area to locate utilities (if conflicts exist). Each year hundreds of excavators (including homeowners) damage utility lines which result in the loss of service for neighborhoods, penalties, litigations, injury and even death. The sad part about this is - it’s all preventable and FREE!
While the only phone number you need to know is 811 – each state has its own rules and regulations. By calling 811 you are directed to your local call center, but you also can find specific information by visiting your state’s 811 site. A directory which includes all states’ websites and links to homeowner and contractor web ticket entries can be found here.
Why risk life and limb when you can get the job finished safely using this free service? Call 811 before digging.
